Yaz (or Yazoo) - “Only You”

This song was the “official” song of my senior prom, which pleasantly shocked me. I went to an all-girls Catholic high school (with Judy) and we were like the outsiders that kind of got along with everybody, but weren’t a part of anyone’s official “clique” or whatever. We did our own thing…part of which was being into alternative/New Wave music, while most of the general population of the high school was listening to Top 40 and whatever was mainstream at the time.

Anyway, we all had to vote on the “senior prom song”. and I figured we’d be voting on something like “Every Rose Has its Thorn” by Poison vs. “The Flame” by Cheap Trick. (Both of which I appreciate, it’s just that they were ULTRA-popular at the time, back in the day.) But, lo and behold, to my surprise, the choices were the above song vs. The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven”. Of course, I actually voted for The Cure (I could never betray Robert) but it was really a win-win situation because “Only You” is a truly amazing song and I’m madly in love with it to this day.

If we only wanted to be happy, it would be easy; but we want to be happer than other people, and that’s almost always difficult, since we think them happier than they are.

And every time I try to pick it up like falling sand
As fast as I pick it up, it runs away through my clutching hands
But there’s nothing else I can really do
There’s nothing else I can really do
There’s nothing else I can really do
At all

- The Cure, “A Letter to Elise”
